James MacMillan is not only a major presence in British music, but also a composer
of international reputation, and his beautifully written choral music shows his wide
range of artistic influences. Taken from a seven-year span, 1990 to 1997, each of
the three pieces reflects Macmillan's ability to candidly express his attitudes
towards his national, political and religious roots through his music.

 

Fellow Scot Alasdair Nicolson composed Four Tales of Enchantment especially for the
LSO St Luke's Youth and Community choirs; an expertly fashioned narrative for
combined professional and amateur forces, it draws together stories from Scotland,
Austria and Japan to create a representation of the seasons.

 

On 27 April the LSO will be performing the world premiere of MacMillan's Passion.
The piece was commissioned to mark the 80th birthday of the LSO's President, Sir
Colin Davis, who will be conducting, and will feature baritone Christopher Maltman
who has collaborated extensively with LSO.
