Principal Guest Conductor, Michael Tilson Thomas, joins the LSO for the next concert
in its Belief series. The concert focuses on two eastern-European masters of
Romanticism, Dvoøák and Janáèek.



Completed in 1889 the Eighth Symphony came at a period in Dvoøák’s life when he
had finally managed to free himself from many of his financial burdens enabling him
to move to a small country house in Vysoká, southern Bohemia. Here, amid the
natural beauties of the Bohemian countryside, Dvoøák found respite, saying that he
felt ’as if cut off from the world‘. This contentment shines through one of his
most relaxed and cheerfully nationalist works.

Glagolitic Mass is one of the many marvels of Janáèek’s late years, a vibrant
vernacular Mass by a non-believer celebrating both the Slavonic identity and the
pulsating energy of nature. Of this work, Janáèek said ’I felt a cathedral grow
out of the giant expanse of the woods‘.



Michael Tilson Thomas is the Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony and
Artistic Director of the New World Symphony, a national training orchestra for the
most gifted graduates of America’s conservatories based in Miami, Florida. He was
Principal Conductor of the LSO from 1988 to 1995 from which time he has been their
Principal Guest Conductor.
