"The ensemble has a vocal soloist with them that is truly able to make the material
come alive, the Irish soprano Ailish Tynan." Gothenburg Post

The Nash Ensemble marks the 211th anniversary of Schubert's birth with a programme
of works exclusively by the subject of their concert series - 'Around Schubert'.
Perhaps his most famous work, the exuberant Trout Quintet D 667, will be performed,
as well as the luminous one-movement Notturno in E flat for Piano Trio. The Nash
welcomes back Ailish Tynan who joins them to sing The Shepherd on the Rock. The
programme also includes Schubert's Quartettsatz in C Minor D 703, which opened the
door to his later music.

Since wining the Rosenblatt Recital Prize at the BBC Singer of the World competition
in 2003, Ailish Tynan has become one of the brightest young stars of the singing
world. A former member of both the Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House
and Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme, Ailish Tynan has performed extensively
both on concert platforms and opera stages across the world, most recently as the
Woodbird in Wagner's Siegfried at the Royal Opera House.

"The Nash Ensemble's performances [...] are devoted and full of insight" Matthew
Rye, The Daily Telegraph, 27 October 2007

Late Night Concert and study day performance at the Southbank Centre

Sunday 3 February 2008, 6pm and 9pm

Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre

As part of the Southbank Centre's year-long celebration of the celebration of the
music of Messiaen, "From the Canyons to the Stars", Pierre-Laurent Aimard leads a
study day focussing on the French compose's pivotal work Quartet for the End of
Time. The day begins at 2.30pm and culminates in complete performances of the work
by the Nash Ensemble in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at 6pm, and in the more intimate
setting of the Front Room at the QEH at 9pm.

Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time is considered to be one of the spiritually
most profound of this devout composer's oeuvre. The work was written in 1940 when
Messiaen was interned in a German prison camp, and discovered a clarinettist,
violinist and cellist amongst his fellow prisoners. Messiaen found an old piano,
formed a quartet and composed eight movements for this unique combination of
instruments, which was performed to fellow prisoners in 1941.

This event promises to be a day (and night) full of insight and discovery not only
of a phenomenal composer but also of what is perhaps his most remarkable
masterpiece.
