Promoters pledge to turn festivals green

· Swiss and Danes show the way to eco-friendly events
· Organisers to make greater use of renewable energy

From Led Zeppelin behaving badly on a fuel-guzzling private jet to U2 touring the world with a giant hydraulic lemon, rock'n'roll is better known for wanton excess than environmental restraint.

But the organisers of music festivals typically left strewn with acres of paper, beer cups, abandoned tents and mounds of rubbish are vowing to make them more environmentally sound.

The promoters behind some of the biggest acts have pledged to increase recycling, make greater use of renewable energy sources, and use less power.
