Surprise: Teenagers Not Buying CDs, Report

Teenagers are no longer buying CDs in meaningful numbers, according to a recent research report. The finding, released by NPD Group, is mostly obvious to music industry executives. But the research firm revealed that a drastic 48 percent of teenagers do not purchase CDs at all, citing survey data.

That represents a sharp increase from a year-ago result of 36 percent, according to the group. Meanwhile, surveys related to music purchasing usually contain large margins of error, especially when issues related to legality arise. That suggests that the 48 percent figure may be significantly higher, and a major contributor to recent-year CD sales drops.
