Week In Review

Album sales continued to slip this week, part of a continued, early-year decline.

Those drops, which follow a 15 percent decline in 2007, prompted a massive restructuring announcement at EMI Music.  The major label pointed to layoffs approaching 2,000 employees within the next six months.

The realignment has stirred serious protests from superstar artists, including Coldplay and Robbie Williams.  The Rolling Stones also rattled this week by planning a one-off release with Universal Music Group, and casting doubt on an ongoing EMI Music contract.

Also this week, Pepsi and Amazon confirmed a massive, Super Bowl promotion, one that revolves around promotional MP3s.  Universal Music Group opted out of the initiative following a negotiation impasse.

Apple revealed strong iPhone and iTunes Store numbers this week, though Steve Jobs offered few music-related releases during his much-anticipated Macworld keynote.  The company unveiled a movie rental service at the event.
