Music Press Relations, explained.

The world of Music PR (Press Relations) is a murky one; it often overlaps into elements of radio plugging and artist liaison, but to break it down, it essentially covers the promoting of an event or product. The event or product is pushed out to three main areas of the music industry; to print and online press, to FM, digital and internet radio, and to taste-making DJs and TV/ web show hosts. The end result, is to earn perhaps airplay, or a magazine interview for a band or brand.

Some PR companies have specific focuses – they may deal with only print media, or only in plugging to student radio stations. The ‘company’ may be as few as one solo manager, or a team consisting of many assistants and multiple managers, all working on separate campaigns. Some large record labels will have full time PR consultants, who will constantly be working on pushing the new content from a range of artists, from special edition LPs to touring news to web video content.

In the role of a PR manager, assistant, or consultant, you will be expected to produce effective campaigns by liaising with online, print and broadcast media contacts, to deliver on specific set goals. Your daily tasks may include creating new and innovative angles on stories, dealing with A&R teams to identify key artists and content. You will often be using social media to monitor audience reach, and reporting back at regular intervals to the hiring music company.

Prospective employers will look for individuals who have established contacts and strong links to the music industry, and an experience in marketing or perhaps artist management.
