The Q Awards 2012Posted on October 23rd, 2012 by Lee Jarvis in Music News
Last night the winners of the 2012 Q Awards were announced at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Music magazine Q has hosted and present the ceremony since its inception in 1990, and they have grown to become a serious event in the UK music industry calendar.
The Q Awards have become notable for a couple of reasons; one being the (drunken?) antics of the celebrities in attendance, but the other is their tributes to lifelong careers and classic musical works, as opposed to ‘*** of the year’. This nod towards the long-term artist makes them unique from other music award events, and has in recent years seen appearances and tributes to Edwyn Collins, Robert Plant, Grace Jones, David Bowie, and Billy Bragg among others.
2012 saw multiple awards go to Britpop legends in the forms of Pulp and Blur; the latter winning ‘Best Live Act’ following their sold out Olympic closing gig at Hyde Park (we also liked their summer EP release and exhibition). There was a big pat on the back to UK rockers Muse, winning ‘Best Act in the World Today’, as well as a nod towards possible future legends such as Emeli Sandé and Plan B, rounding out an outstanding year for British music.
