Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 LSQ New Music Awards.
The Lunar Sax Quartet are a group of young, adventurous and talented individuals, with a strong belief that fresh and modern musical input is paramount in keeping the arts relevant in an ever-evolving world. Having already received recognition for their commissioning and performance of established composers, the group wanted to reach out and support new talent, and with the pool of compositional schools and universities around the country, they developed the LSQ New Music Awards.
Now in its third season, the LSQ New Music Award is open to any British student at college, university, or conservatoire. Previous winners (James Williamson (RAM), Mark David Boden (RWCMD) and Benjamin Tubb (RNCM)), have seen their pieces recorded on the LSQ projects ‘These Visions’ and ‘Flux’, and also published by contemporary music specialists Staunch Music. The application deadline is February 14th 2012, however, initial contact with the LSQ is needed by 1st November 2011 in order to have the opportunity to workshop your work (in progress) prior to submission with our competition composer in residence. From their press release:
“The 2012 competition will see eight composer’s works premiered by the Lunar Saxophone Quartet at top London venue The Forge during July 2012. Finalists will have their pieces critiqued by the judging panel on the evening as well as national press and music publishers being present to hear their work. The winning composer will have their piece recorded by the LSQ on an upcoming album with 2nd and 3rd sponsors prizes also being awarded on the evening.

The LSQ, comprised of Joel Garthwaite (Soprano), Hannah Riches (Alto), Lewis Evans (Tenor), and Lauren Hamer (Baritone), have worked on several projects since their formation; their ‘Catching Sunlight‘ album was awarded an MBF Ensembles Award in 2008, and received critical acclaim with 4star reviews in Jazzwise magazine and The Independent on Sunday, and 5star reviews across Germany and Russia. ‘These Visions’ and ‘Flux’, were nominated for a Royal Philharmonic Society Award in 2009 in the Emerging Artist category and were awarded the position of Ensemble in Residence at Young Composer of Dyfed for the 2009/2010 season.
In just a few short years, the LSQ have performed at many an event, including Bryn Terfel’s Faenol Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Deal Festival, Cambridge Summer Music Festival and the Welsh Proms, as well as various recitals and TV and radio work (with BBC Radio Wales, BBC Wales Today and BBC Radio 5 Live). Shown below is a clip from the LSQ’s evening concert at The Forge Venue in Camden, London during October 2009.
Supporting emerging composers is something that the LSQ are passionate about, and offering young composers the opportunity to showcase their works at high profile venues in both the UK and abroad is both a commendable idea and unique ‘foot in the door’ for students.
