Leonard Cohen Announces One-off UK Gig

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Leonard Cohen Old Ideas album cover

Three-hour set in the southern countryside.

Having been last been in the UK to promote the release of his latest album, Old Ideas, the veteran musician is making this his only UK tour date, and so the three-hour set will feature many of his classics (He is often best known for songs such as Hallelujah, I’m Your Man and Suzanne), as well as new material from the recent LP release.

The event will take place on 8th September at The Hop Farm in Kent. The venue and promoter, Vince Power, have also hosted ‘The Hop Farm Festival’ each summer over the last five years – a fiercely independent event that prides itself on the fact that they accept no corporate sponsorship or branding. Hop Farm seems very fitting for the zen-master Cohen, who seems to do things on his own terms also. Tickets for the open air one-off Cohen gig are now on sale, priced at £65-£95, and available from A Day At The Hop Farm.

Cohen returned to performing live back in 2008 after a 15 year hiatus – mostly due to a preceding court case and his sparse finances at the time. His ‘comeback years’ have been superb and he has continued to deliver the goods with new music and some stunning live performances, holding the audience in the palm of his hand.

We first listened to Cohen’s latest LP back in January, and enjoyed the continued evolution of the Canadian singer-songwriter’s work. You can stream the Old Ideas album via Spotify below.

The Glade Festival soon became known as the festival for all kinds of house, techno, breaks and electronica, deep in the English countryside. From the micro-raves to the 21st Century Cinema camp, the burning pyramids to sunrise parties, Glade is full of the unexpected, the baffling, the fiercely independent, and the eclectic. And that goes for both the music and the people. (more…)

we love... coloursound festival

A series of autumn gig dates peak with the final festival bash, as Northern England welcomes some dance music greats.

A gathering of titans of dance music is happening very soon in Leeds. We Love…, famous for their epic Sunday parties at Space in Ibiza (but also of record label and tv show fame), are playing co-host to the final installment of Coloursound. Coloursound are creating a lot of noise whilst still in their first year, having already graced venues such as The Warehouse and Nation of Shopkeepers, teamed up with Cadenza and presented an array of top-name DJs from Stacy Pullen to Kenny Dope to A Guy Called Gerald. How to top an opening season like that? Enter Groove Armada

Over the past decade, Groove Armada have become established as one of the planet’s most-loved and biggest selling dance acts. The duo, Tom Findlay and Andy Cato, have stormed the charts and headlined stages at the world’s biggest festivals. Then, in 2010, they redefined the GA sound. Black Light, their 6th studio album, achieved massive critical acclaim, and a year headlining festivals from Australia to Moscow ended in Los Angeles and a Grammy nomination. As a Live band they were legendary. 2011: The RED LIGHT shows open a new chapter. A 4 decks, multi F-X, audio visual DJ experience. Rooted in the warehouse. Delivered stadium style.

The new Groove Armada Red Light show sounds fantastic, and is supported by artists such as Heidi, J Magik, DJ Fresh and many more, spread across four rooms of house, techno and drum’n'bass. Check out a preview of the audio visual extravaganza…

Tickets are available here.

iTunes Festival – London 2011

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

itunes festival logo

How does 31 consecutive nights of back-to-back musical legends and boundary-pushing young guns sound? Well, that’s exactly what the iTunes Festival is serving up in London this July. Kicking off with the phenomenal Paul Simon on July 1st and continuing every night of the month, The Roundhouse sees talented artists such as Kasabian, Foo Fighters, Jamie Woon, Duran Duran, Adele, Friendly Fires and many many more pass through their doors.

Camden’s The Roundhouse is a piece of British music history in its own right. After starting out as a steam engine repair shed in 1846, the space started hosting music shows in the 1960s, went on to play host to Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd, eventually progressing to an elaborate art, dance, theatre, music and multi-aspect event space.

Ready for the next bombshell? Tickets are free. All you have to do is apply on the iTunes Festival website and you will be placed into a draw to win tickets. You can enter as many draws as you like, although some winners have been announced already (sorry, I’m only just finding this out myself!). If you cannot make it to London or miss out on tickets for a particular night, help is still at hand; you can download exclusive apps for your iPhone, iPad apps and watch the concerts live on your mobile device or tablet. You can also stream the video feed through iTunes to your computer.

One of the highlights of 2010? How about Goldfrapp performing Ooh La La

Sonar Music Festival Preview!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Sonar LogoI, for one, am very excited for the Sonar Music Festival this year. Probably because I couldn’t go last year and kick-off this season is just 9 days away and counting! Sonar is a three day event in Barcelona, Spain that attracts artists, musicians and clubbers from across the globe. Their extravagant themes and mish-mish of music and art make for a weird and wonderful time; they have successfully hosted the annual event for the last 14 years and show no sign of slowing down, expecting 80,000 people this year.

The festival’s line-ups tend to favour electronic dance music, be that house, techno, electro, hip-hop or a modern mash-up of them all. They love to feature new exciting experimental acts, unafraid to push boundaries of music, DJing and VJing, and also support many home-grown artists.

This year’s show has two main themes as the basis for it’s programme: the “female factor” in today’s music and “hybridism” as the result of the intersection of musical genres and subgenres. Sonar has incorporated world class female acts into the immense line-up; live shows from Roisin Murphy and Goldfrapp complement DJ sets from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs and Magda. A great example of the ‘hybridism’, and part of the sustained proof that Sonar is one of the best festivals in the world to check out the cream of national and international talent, is the premiere outing of a unique ‘dream team’. Pop jazz superstar Jamie Cullum, alongside brother Ben, have enlisted the help of original Underworld member Darren Emerson, then top it off with Matt White, guitarist for The Bays and The Egg, and Dave DeRose, drummer for Roisin Murphys band. Wow. I think you’ll be getting a full review on that!

The Sonar experience is split into two parts. Sonar by Day takes place in the centre of Barcelona from midday and is a great place to meet and network amongst a real variety of art and music. Sonar by Night is one crazy all-night party, out in the suburbs with the music taking place in huge arenas, hence the huge line-ups!

All this in the wonderful city of Barcelona, Gaudi’s playground, I just know that I’m going to be so torn and pushed for time, and ultimately, late for everything. Good job they don’t eat dinner until midnight.
