Soulful, edgy and innovative, headliners The Boxettes create vocal harmonies, dreamy soundscapes and all percussion and effects with their vocal chords. last fm logo

Music discovery service Last.fm is spreading its wings and delving into the fire of live events. Based in London, the events will be curated by the data that Last.fm collects, and that in turn, is powered by the listeners of the service – offering opportunities for popular underground artists to reach out to their fan base in a live situation. As the first headline act, they have announced CocknBullKid, psuedonym of Anita Blay, a London pop/soul singer, who has been picking up support and recognition on her Last.fm page.

From the press release: ‘CocknBullKid has spent the past four years exploring all manner of influences forging a distinctive colourful pop sound and winning her a slot on Jools Holland. When asked about her appearance at the primary Live Friday gig, CocknBullKid said “All I’m saying is that there’ll be a story – a cradle to the grave journey. And it will be very interactive. There may even be vogueing.”

The series of events launch on Friday 7th October, and will showcase musicians selected according to the popularity of listener’s scrobbles and the Last.fm Hype Charts – “providing a line-up of the most popular and hottest up and coming artists“. From October-December, the gigs will take place at MAMA Group’s ‘The Garage’ before moving to sister venue the HMV Forum Kentish Town in January 2012

The Vinyl Factory Launches “Concept Store” in London

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

musicisart3

The Vinyl Factory‘s “concept store” is now open in London.

The new shop and gallery is located in the Front Room of the St Martins Lane Hotel, and represents The Vinyl Factory’s first foray into displaying and selling its art and music limited editions in a physical space.

The company – FACT’s mothership – has built a formidable reputation crafting high-spec deluxe vinyl editions of records, always with a strong visual or fine art component, by the likes of Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewlett, Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones, Hot Chip, David Lynch and Massive Attack.

The new retail residency will last three months, during which time there will be a series of new editions launched and changing exhibitions. Among the new additions to the portfolio is a limited edition box set of music from The Most Incredible Thing, the forthcoming Sadler’s Wells ballet scored by the Pet Shop Boys in collaboration with choreographer/director Javier de Frutos.

Also set to see release this Spring is a limited edition of Duran Duran‘s latest album, All You Need Is Now, with artwork by the acclaimed British artist Clunie Reid, in collaboration with Pop magazine art director Rory McCartney.

The temporary store/gallery – an homage to the relationship between art and music – also offers the public the rare chance to find previous Vinyl Factory editions available for sale offline, including Massive Attack’s Heligoland, Michael Nyman’s Cine Opera and Bryan Ferry’s Olympia.

Opening hours are 11-7pm Tuesday to Saturday, 12-6pm on Sunday. More information here.

Un-Convention Factory at the Roundhouse: February 26th 2011

Friday, February 4th, 2011

un convention

We’ve covered some of the Un-Convention events in the past, and we still rate them as some of the most exciting and important industry happenings. February sees them bring their own brand of Factory session to The Roundhouse in London.

The premise of the event is to demystify the music industry, laying bare the processes involved, and allowing participants a unique insight into what often seems a rather impenetrable business, with a view to inspiring all involved to pursue their own creative endeavours.

Six special music collaborations will cover tracks from London Calling by The Clash. The Clash have quite a connection with The Roundhouse, playing their 5th ever gig there and rehearsing just behind the venue. The community of music lovers will then record, produce and release an album in one day. The works will then be debated over by 80 invited music industry experts and 200 participants.

A range of new digital platforms will also be showcased including MusicGlue, SoundCloud and Songkick.

There will also be involvement from the Featured Artist Coalition (FAC), campaigners for the protection of UK performers and musicians rights.

The event involves some of the most influential to most inspirational people in music including:

Jagz Kooner, John Dyer (Domino Records), Jon McClure, Mark Meharry (Music Glue), John Robb, Howard Monk (The Local), John Emspon (Eden Sessions), Scott Cohan, Fiona Stewart (Green Man), Ray Paul (BBC 1Xtra), Dan Rafferty (Shambala), Lee Denny (Lee Fest), Helienne Lindvall, Ian Johnson (Enter Shikari), Ammo Taylor (Punch Records), Mark Williams (Heart and Soul), Laura Kidd, Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music), Tracey Moberly, Stefan Szczelkun (Agitdisco), Viv Albertine (ex. The Slits), Charli XCX, Jo Good (BBC 6 Music), Kim Booth (Rebel Butterfly), Jon McClure (RSS), Louis Barabbas (Debt Records), Ben Watts (Buzzin Fly Records), Khalid Amin, Jez Collins (Birmingham City University), Lupa (Colombian Hip Hop from Medellin), Trish (Strummerville), Nicole McNeilly (Musicares, Sri Lanka), Andrew Dubber (New Music Strategies), Steve Lawson… plus many more.

Accompanying the recording will be a selection of panels, workshops and showcases. The highlight panels feature Music As A Tool For Social Change – featuring people working on music projects in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Colombia and the UK; The Politicisation of Music; Women in Music; New Music Strategies; an Event and Festival Session. A range of new digital platforms will also be showcased including MusicGlue, SoundCloud and Song Kick. There will be one-to-one consultancies for bands and live music performance throughout the day.

Un-Convention Factory has been held in Macclesfield and Goiania, Brazil. For the first Un-Convention Factory event an old mill in Macclesfield was transformed into the Un-convention Factory, a bustling hive of musicians, industry experts and young creatives all working together to produce a brand new album over the course of the day. Beginning at 9am, with an intro from Har Mar Superstar, eight bands including the likes of I Am Kloot, Reverend Soundsystem and The Whip recorded in half hour sessions in front of 300 participants.

Tickets are available from The Roundhouse box office. (Tickets: £8 // Doors: 10am – 6pm)

More information is also available at the Un-Convention website.

FM – A mini rant, Charity event, Indian Health Resort and ‘How Not to Get Ripped Off’

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Afternoon to you all.

I have to say it was a little strange not heading off to the pub last Monday for an FM. Strange but good to have a break.

The number of out of office replies I am currently getting suggests the rest of the industry is off at the moment but can I please request that there really is no need to say where you are going in your message. I don’t really want to know about those of you in Barbados, St Lucia, Thailand or Australia.

It really is quite enough just to say you’re away – for those of us without holiday plans, it’s more than enough to bear!

Despite the exodus, there is still plenty of news.

Before I update you all, I really wanted to get something off my chest. Not quite my Friday rant about the difference between the Music industry and the Record industry. But a little rant non the less.

I think we have developed Cultural ADHD.

I know we have a history in this country for building people up and then knocking them down; the reasons for which seem inexplicable to me. However, as technology continues to change the way we live our lives, it seems we have developed an insatiable appetite not only for the technology but also what we consume through it.

This year, we have the highest number of female artists nominated for a Mercury. On this basis, there is already talk that labels are no longer signing female artists as they’ve ‘had their time’. Increasingly we give a band 2 albums at best before we get entirely bored of them (or is it the case that actually the quality of music being made is actually dropping?). The proliferation of electronic bands seems to have been and gone too. And what next – folk?

Align this with our insatiable appetite for technology. Myspace is so last year, Facebook so last month – Twitter – well that’s so yesterday. Spotify – how long will the enthusiasm for that last – some say the bubble has already burst. Rightly or wrongly, I am not a big myspacer, facebooker or twitterer. As you should know, I value personal relationships – it’s the very reason for the creation of FM.

It seems to me we are so obsessed with what’s next, we don’t seem to take much stock of what’s now and make much of an effort to enjoy it. Whatever happened to letting things develop and grow – good old fashioned nurturing?

People continue to demonstrate their love of being part of something real – festivals, gigs and so on. But now some of the festivals are suffering – is that because there are too many? Yes others are selling out like Glastonbury, Bestival etc

All I know is that our ability to enjoy something for a reasonable length of time seems to be diminishing as we have greater expectations from technology and what it delivers.

That this is spilling over into the way we enjoy music I think is a real concern. I think we need to take a collective deep breath and take a little more time to enjoy what so many people have spent so much time, effort and energy into making.

OK, so now on to other things.

Going back briefly to holidays, I have come across a pretty spectacular resort in Goa. Now we are not a travel agent so you really do have to go through to the link and do all the necessary checks but this place does look stunning and if you think a healthy retreat but be just what you need, maybe in the New Year, then this seems like an ideal spot. You can check all of the details out here

and if you want to find out more, please contact them directly here anna@essence-communications.com

With so much covered in this mailing, I’m going to leave it at that for now but details will follow later this week of September FM events in London, Liverpool and New York.

The End is Nigh!

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

It has just been announced that London clubbing Mecca, The End, is to close it’s doors for the final time in January 2009. Known and loved by many all over the world, The End has been a true pioneer of underground dance music over the last 12 or so years, hosting groundbreaking nights across house, techno, drum&bass, breakbeat and much more.

Director Layo Paskin states “Even though the past few years have arguably been our most successful as a club and as a business, I don’t particularly believe that there’s anything more that we can achieve”, and I have to say I’d find it challenging to think of how they could continue to top their record, especially with some key members of the team eager to try new things. It’s not as if the club were over the hill, far from it, but that almost makes it even greater, to go out on a high, and be remembered as outstanding.

Built by Layo (as in ‘Layo & Bushwacka’) and Mr C (as in ‘Ebeneezer Goode’), The End was often seen as the perfect club in many ways for DJs and clubbers; that circular DJ booth in the middle of the dance floor, the incredible sound system, and the friendly and diverse crowd.

Layo continues, “It’s partially a circumstantial decision, and partially a decision of choice”, adding, “We’ve had offers for the club before, and yes, this was the best one. But I wouldn’t say that it’s so good that it makes this a purely financial issue … If it was seven or eight years ago, an offer like this wouldn’t have been accepted. It’s a lot to do with the timing.”

On a personal level, I know I will certainly miss the club; my first ‘proper’ night clubbing was about 7 years ago to see Steve Lawler play a 6 hour set in the main room, and I’ve been hooked ever since, returning for the likes of Jeff Mills, Layo & Bushwacka, Chew the Fat, and the infamous Jaded after-hours parties. I know I will not be alone, judging by the eleven pages of comments on the website since yesterday’s announcement!

On a business level, add this to the other superclub closures of 2008 (The Cross, The Key, Canvas and Turnmills), and clubland has been well and truly shaken up. What will the future hold for the likes of a newly refurbed Pacha, a re-launched Bar Rhumba, and new-kid-on-the-block Matter, opening any day now from the people who brought you Fabric? Stay tuned for more news and interviews ;)

Former Superjesus Front-woman Sarah McLeod plays London!

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

The former front-woman of Aussie band Superjesus the supremely talented Sarah McLeod will be performing live at The Metro Club on Oxford Street on Wednesday 13th August 2008 and we implore you to check her out!

Sarah first stepped into the spotlight as the lead singer for The Superjesus who released three successful albums and went on to win multiple awards including 3 Aria’s (Aussie Grammy).
In mid 2007, Sarah jetted off across the globe to Jimmy Douglass’ studio in Miami, The Spot, where they were joined by Grammy nominee, cult hip hop guru ill Factor (Roisin Murphy, Ginuwine, MatisYahu). Ill Factor and Sarah discovered they had a unique musical chemistry, and ill was instrumental in nurturing and drawing out an untapped side to Sarah’s compositions. Currently finishing up the mixes, the record is said to have her distinctive gutsy pop rock vibe mixed with the genius overtones of Jimmy’s globally respected production techniques and iLL’s edgy driving beats and is no doubt her finest work to date.
