Perfume Genius – ‘Hood’

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Perfume Genius aka Seattle-based solo artist Mike Hadreas is causing a little bit of a stir with the video for his new single ‘Hood’ which YouTube declared as unfit for family viewing.

The video features Hadreas and porno actor Arpad Miklos in their skivvies embracing, applying makeup and (bizarrely) pretending to be Freddy Kruger.

Hadreas has told Pitchfork that the track is a powerful and self-aware lesson in love ”The song’s about how if someone knew you 100%, they would go away. So, in the video, I didn’t acknowledge him until I was fully done-up in all my gear and my wig. That’s how I feel in general. That freaky shit underneath– that’s kind of who I am, really.”

Hood features on Hadreas second album “Put Your Back N 2 It” which was released in the UK on 20th February and is streaming in full on Spotify http://open.spotify.com/album/62sWqx1h4AjtVWtcs25AkE

PURE Launch New Music Streaming Service

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

Pure Music

A new multi-platform, cloud based music subscription service launching in the UK.

PURE Music plans to launch in December, offering instant access to millions of songs for just £4.99 per month. The music will be cloud-based, and then playable from any internet device, such as laptops, smartphones and PURE’s existing range of internet radios. The interface used will be The Lounge, an already active ‘gateway’ to all kinds of on-demand content, including live radio, podcasts and listen again programmes. PURE will also be offering apps for the iPhone, with an Android version coming soon too.

One of the key features is a tagging process when listening via a PURE radio. When listening to a radio show, you can essentially ‘bookmark’ the current track, then come back to it later and find other tracks by the same artist, or play all your bookmarked tracks together. In addition, PURE claim a powerful search function, displaying various back catalogue and similar artist recommendations each time you search, making new music discovery a lot easier and more enjoyable. There is also a playlist function, allowing easy creation by dragging and dropping into place, and those playlists can then be shared via Facebook and Twitter.

Whilst PURE has created an interesting interface, and obviously hope to sell more radios via the ease of compatibility and raising brand awareness, it is actually existing streaming provider 7digital who have providing the backbone and catalogue of tunes. Check out the promo video below…

Will PURE Music be a Spotify-killer? Who knows? On the face of it, it looks very similar, but comes at half the price. The range of compatible devices are good (you really need to include EVERYTHING for a full market-wide uptake), so I guess we will have to see what the actual service and recommendations are like. For more info check out PURE.

Music Jobs Team playlist 014: Woman Power

music jobs playlist banner 416 x 60

Over the years, we have been blessed with some incredible female singers, songwriters and musicians. The recent passing of Amy Winehouse is a loss to the music world, regardless of what you thought of her personal choices. In another life, she could have continued singing for another 40 years and created many more albums.

Her passing also inspired me to revisit some other amazing vocalists, their uplifting, haunting or heart-wrenching voices drenched with raw energy and emotion. Some relatively new faces, some classic legends, some classic ballads, some abstract pieces of expression. All strong icons for future female artists. All worthy of a special listen.

Music Jobs Team playlist 013: Remixed

Friday, June 10th, 2011

music jobs playlist banner 416 x 60

Remixes are a grey area, but can often completely break a sing, legitimate or not. They can range from bootleg mash-ups a la Girl Talk to a cover of a well know song in a completely different genre, to RnB jams remixed for the nightclub dancefloor. Many times I have heard an interesting mix of a well known track that has inspired me to go back and look up the original, and I dare say that many older musicians and bands have been rediscovered by a younger audience when the band of the moment covers or improvises on a classic hit live at a concert.

For this recent playlist, I’ve tried to delve into all of those ideas. For me, remixing is a great way to inspire creativity, and to stir interest. I’ve tried to pick up on several different genres from some very well known artists and some newcomers. Have a listen and let us know what you think. Also feel free to share your own playlists, from Spotify or elsewhere!

Maybe it’s the wintry, dark evenings, maybe it’s the whisky, but this January we seem to have been on a soul music kick. New albums such as Charles Bradley’s ‘No Time For Dreaming’ lean heavily on the sounds of the past, and that set the motion for a soul-fuelled Spotify playlist from the Music Jobs Team.
