Can’t we be friends?

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

As a member of this growing community I felt the need to share an experience that changed the way I use Music Jobs and find work in the music industry. I moved to London just over a year ago and took my Masters in Music at Goldsmiths University.

As music producer and a professional guitarist I started using Music Jobs to look for jobs in this field. While there are interesting offers posted by companies everyday, it seems the perfect opportunities are sparse and for every application there are dozens of applicants and competition is fierce. There are so many talented people registered on the site and hoping to get discovered and hired. It could quickly get overwhelming and frustrating, and many users complain about how hard it is to get a real job by using this site. Then I found the real golden button. It’s that simple ‘friend request’ button.

Once I stopped thinking that everyone is just in competition with each other and started using this feature, I started to make some real connections and find real work. Music Jobs lists literally thousands of music professionals from all aspects of the music business and finding the ones you’re after is dead simple. I started looking for singer/songwriters, instrumentalists and record labels around London using the “Find People” tab, and sent friend requests to people that seemed interesting. What I found was that people are eager to connect and to exchange ideas and help each other out. I am now producing a singer/songwriter from Cypress, working on a soul album with a saxophone player and have an arsenal of connections to some great musicians, all listed on the site and eager to collaborate and get things done.

I recommend a change of mind set to all of you registered users of this site. Stop waiting to be discovered and start making your career happen for you. Whilst Music Jobs is not Facebook or Twitter, nor does it claim to be, you could still connect to anyone who is listed here and search for the most relevant people to you and in the area where you live. Once you do that I’m confident that you will find some real value in the site and the membership fee (which a lot of people complain about) would seem insignificant.

Just to make things clear, I was not commissioned to write this by Music Jobs, I am a musician developing my career just like you guys and I think I found one way of breaking the ice so I just thought it would be good to share.

THE PEOPLE’S MUSIC AWARDS

Friday, May 6th, 2011

TPMA_NEW_LOGO

The People’s Music Awards, now in it’s 3rd successful year, is cementing it’s reputation as the leading competition for new and unsigned music.  This year’s awards, in association with Bing, are officially supported by AIM (Association of Independent Musicians), MPG (Music Producers Guild), Unsigned Guide, Secret Garden Party and our good selves.

Hosted by Eddy Temple-Morris (XFM) the ceremony, held in London on June 18th 2011, will see 16 finalists perform live, and the winners presented with their awards in front of the music industry, the press and The People.

Finalists will also receive greater exposure, with the awards being simultaneously broadcast live on U-stream, along with a 1 hour special to shown on SBTV, Euro Channel and Bonsai TV, the following week.  1 lucky winner will also get the chance to play a headline support slot at this year’s hugely anticipated Secret Garden Party Festival.

Founder of the awards and all round lovely chap Dylan Satow had this to say:

“Its great to keep building on the success of the last 2 years and to have the support of so many amazing organisations and people, who believe in helping new and unsigned bands achieve their goals. The quality of acts this year is once again of top calibre and with the launch of the new website, mobile and social network applications we plan to reach an even larger demographic across the next 12 months, really putting the power back into the hands of the people to choose the real music stars of tomorrow.

The website is currently undergoing a complete revamp and will be re-launching this June, with tons of new features for unsigned artists and new-music lovers, so watch this space!”

Tickets for this year’s awards ceremony are now on sale to the public. To find out more, purchase tickets and see highlights from last year’s ceremony visit: http://www.thepeoplesmusicawards.com/events

Facebook Event page

The ridiculously prolific Luke Rathborne has only existed on this earth for a mere 22 years, and has already found himself with a body load of work. His heavenly but haunting melodies and tales will leave you reawakened to a sound and intimacy that surpasses artists twice his age. The US singer/songwriter’s self-titled debut EP is out on March 7th. It features members of Anthony And The Johnsons as his backing band & prompted Lauren Laverne to describe the 22-year old as ”your new favourite hipster”.

Former Brit School student, singer/songwriter Kelli-Leigh is a fusion of rock, pop, soul & funk. She’s performed all over the world & more recently with Adele in both the UK & Europe including a stunning performance on Radio 1′s Live Lounge. Kelli’s incredible voice and star quality has resulted in critically acclaimed shows at Indigo 02 , Embassy and The Station Sessions.
BREAKING NEWS – It has just been announced that Kelli Leigh will be joining Adele on her UK, European and North American tour as her backing vocalist. Monday 28th February will be Kelli’s last live UK date with her band (including one of the UK’s most sensational female drummers) before she heads off on tour.

iVienna are four young lads whose epic soar-away choruses and anthemic tunes have already seen them escape their Bournemouth roots and start to create a real buzz within the music industry. With comparisons to Arcade Fire and Editors and a new single (recorded at Abbey Road Studios) on the way in March, it’s clear 2011 is going to be the year IVienna leave their mark on the UK music scene. As a treat to their fans, new and old, you can head over to their Soundcloud page and download the brilliant single ‘Exertion’ for free.

Get Signed Live! Expo, Workshops & Win 1-on-1 Time With Industry Pros – 22nd-23rd May 2010

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Get Signed Live Banner

Get Signed LIVE! is an event based at The Old Truman Brewery on London’s famous Brick Lane, 22nd-23rd May 2010. The event has been created to help musicians navigate their way through the music industry, notorious for its locked doors and dead ends.

The format of the event is simple: Expo, Workshops and a Live Stage.

The Expo features service providers from all areas of the industry including Recording, Mastering, Pressing, Promo Videos, Promotional Merchandise and Digital Distribution, to name a few. It gives the music makers a chance to meet and work with some of the best companies around whilst always making sure they get great value for money. You can work with Metropolis Studios, Arising Artist, Heart of Gold Studios, Digital Disc Duplication and many more.

The Workshops are hosted by industry professionals and are run throughout both days. Speakers offer advice on areas such as Legal, Management, Touring, Image and Distribution; all speakers are professionals of their sector. Speakers include: Adam Sieff (Global Head of A&R, SellaBand and Industry guru), Ian Clifford (Illicit Entertainment / Make it in Music), Leonard Lowy (Leonard Lowy Solicitors and Founder of the Musicians Clinic).

The Live Stage is a chance to catch some of the latest bands about to break the scene. For bands interested in playing need to submit their demo to the Demo Mission Derby on the official GSL! Blog

Five lucky buyers of tickets via UK Music Jobs will be given the chance to receive a 1-on-1 30min session with either an A&R representative, Plugger, Manager or Promoter.
