This vacancy was posted on 17/11/09 The magazine, voice of the string music world since 1890, is looking for an Assistant Editor.
The role has the responsibility for researching and commissioning several regular pages each month, as well as subbing the copy for them, requesting pictures and seeing the pages through to their final stages.
The position also involves sub-editing several features and regulars each month, and seeing them through from raw copy to finished magazine pages.
In addition, the Assistant editor also has responsibility for compiling the magazine's Calendar each year and for assisting with the magazine’s supplements.
The ideal candidate will:
• be a confident sub-editor who has experience of editing a wide range of different copy, ensuring it is accurate, structurally clear, observes house style and is a pleasure to read
• have previous experience of running magazine sections or pages
• be a confident interviewer and be able to generate lucid and appropriate quotes to throw light on a feature
• have excellent writing skills, and the ability to structure ideas to produce coherent, clear and appealing prose
• be used to coming up with arresting and appropriate headlines and standfirsts
• have superb organisational and time-management skills, with the proven ability to successfully juggle several tasks at once
• be a strong team player with excellent communication skills who has the demonstrable ability to support and work effectively with colleagues
• have experience of sub-editing and of working on magazine text in MS Word and InDesign, and have a familiarity with MS Office, databases, web and email software
A classical music qualification in desirable, but a knowledge of and interest in classical music are essential.
An awareness of and interest in issues in the string music world – studying, playing, teaching and making – is also desirable.
