Required for September 2010
Thornden is a mixed 11-16 comprehensive with 1400 pupils on roll. It is an over-subscribed school with a firm commitment to comprehensive principles. We have specialisms in Arts and Science and are a Leading Edge School. There is easy close access to the M3.
In 2009, 86% of pupils achieved 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C (including English and Maths) and our CVA score was 1027.8. We were graded outstanding in every category in our 2007 Ofsted Inspection. We have a distinctive ethos which combines a relatively informal, friendly and supportive approach with a sharp focus on learning and achievement. Pupils are valued as individuals and we have a flexible approach to grouping including much mixed ability teaching.
We wish to appoint a talented musician with the vision and skills to be able to develop music teaching still further and make full use of our outstanding facilities. We have been an Arts College since 2000 and has an exceptionally strong music tradition. In 2002 we built Thornden Hall which we believe is the best custom built concert hall on a state school site in the entire country. It has excellent acoustics, 400 raked seats, professional standard equipment, is the base for Hampshire County Youth Orchestra and is used by many community and some professional musical ensembles.
Music is a high profile subject with excellent results at GCSE and a very large extra curricular programme. There are three other music teachers, a separate Director of extra curricular vocal work and peripatetic teachers catering for over 300 students.
We would welcome applications both from ambitious talented musicians with limited experience or existing Heads of Department.
If you wish to make informal enquiries, please ring the school and ask for Rob Sykes, Headteacher or Su Whelan, Deputy Headteacher.
The school operates all safer recruitment procedures.
Application forms and further details are available from the school office or Website.
