We will need a new Music Director when Robert Court leaves his 12-year tenure at the end of 2010. We are looking for a gifted choral director to maintain and develop our tradition of inspiring performances.

About us

About 30 singers
5/6 concerts a year, at least one with a professional chamber orchestra (usually baroque or classical), some with organ, others a capella
Many take place in St Augustine’s Church, Penarth where we have a good following and which can seat over 200.
Our reading skills are generally good and we have fortnightly rehearsals – currently Saturday mornings in the Tabernacle, The Hayes, Cardiff – broadly during term times.
Currently the Music Director and section leader audition potential members and there are no further auditions.

About the Music Director

Rehearses (currently without accompanist) the choir and directs the concerts
Fixes musicians and soloists within budget
Proposes programmes within budget
Is a member of the management committee
Is paid by the choir out of choir funds
Our ideal Music Director will

Have a solid and wide-ranging grounding in music and particular skill in choral/vocal music
Be experienced in training and directing choral and instrumental groups
Be an excellent and inspiring communicator
Have an understanding of vocal training and be able to improve the members’ technique
Be a team player able to work with the committee and choir
Have a good network of contacts to be able to provide soloists, instrumentalists, potential venues; and contacts eg in the educational sphere that might be a source of choral singers as well new projects.
Be able to devise interesting and challenging programmes
The position will carry remuneration to be negotiated.

When you have all the information, you will need to send a CV giving details of your relevant experience and qualifications together with an outline of how you meet the profile above and your proposals for developing Cantemus.

The selection process will depend on the number and quality of the applicants but is likely to include an interview and, for those selected for the short list, a choir rehearsal to introduce applicants to the members and rehearse some music.

We will be receiving applications up to 31 December 2009 and will aim to carry out the selection process during February, March and April 2010. This will give the Music Director-elect the opportunity to see how the choir currently operates and begin preparing proposals for the 2011 programme.
