Caroline im in the same boat..I have zero experience in the music industry but am very keen to get involved..starting to think its impossible as even people with experience are struggling! Probably best starting at the very bottom as a runner and hope it gets you a foot in the door.

I only started using it last night lol. If you're willing to start at the bottom then things are a lot easier. I for example just emailed a recording studio about a runner job and they emailed me straight back! I also recommend the channel 4 jobs website, havent got the link but if you google it im sure it will come straight up. Good luck to you too :)

As said before - if you only are lucky enough to be able to afford it, start from square one - working for free, and progress your way through. It's the easiest way, seriously, and most of the companies will take you on board anyway, even if a job isn't advertised - I mean, it would be silly of any employer *not* to take a pair of hands, skilled more or less, doesn't really matter, for free - wouldn't it?

Unfortunately, not everyone is as privileged, which makes setting your foot in the door so much more difficult. But if you can do this, have the financial support for a few months' time, then by all means go for it - and I'm sure you'll do OK. As to how long I've been looking - well, I've been on the outskirts of the music industry since 2007, doing various bits and bobs, as my CV shows, but it's still not and hasn't been what I really want to do in the future. Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to settle for a job that brings home the bacon — and I have to say I have been happy that so far I've managed to get jobs that were, at least, semi-music related and haven't had to resort to labour, pub or hotel work in my career. Sometimes I think, however, that it might have been a good thing to do, just go for a simple job, save the money and then sign up for a few internships, rather than trying to make my way through stubbornly while keeping paid jobs the whole time, but jobs that are not making me fully fulfilled…

Are you looking for a financial position within a music firm or to start from scratch doing something else?

I would have thought you'd have no problem at all if it's the former.

If not, it's easy to get experience if you look, but converting that to a paid job takes good networking, luck & stamina!

:-)

The best way to get into the music industry these days is....

...by doing something off of your own back. Start a record label. Start a studio. Start a management company. PR. Anything....

Get networking! :)

A job such as accountancy within the music industry is vastly different to looking for work in the creative area eg recording studios. A qualified accountant would NEVER have to work for free - the idea is laughable!

Music and media is just the same as any other field if you're doing a "proper" job. Positions are advertised, and interviews happen, just like any other industry. It's not that different, other than it's much smaller than other industries.

To the OP - what do you want to do in the music industry? why music? as an accountant, the wages are way better in other fields!
