It's incredible the amount of people who don't realise that the maximum age for working in any area of the music industry is 25, whether that be in an administrative role, such as an intern, or in a creative capacity, such as a performer, composer, producer, teacher, music leader, community musician etc. That goes for any genre of music as well, be it pop, classical, jazz, hip hop etc.
Glad to be of help,
Ron.

I can only asume that the comments from Ron (Average) about a maximum age of 25 are 'tongue-in-cheek'.
There is no such thing as a maximum age for starting out to work in the music industry. Sure, there are some positions that require greater stamina and are more suited to the younger individual, such as the heavy lifting and all night recording sessions but you are still young enough to easily handle this.
I have had a life long passion for music but always worked in other fields until I was 40 years old. It was at this stage that I decided to earn my money through something that I loved to do so I enrolled at university (after successful completion of an access to engineering course) and started a BSc in Music Systems Engineering. I achieved a 2:1 Honours degree in 2007 and have never been happier. I now run my own business.
My advice is to follow your dream and make it happen. 28 is still young and, in my case, life really did begin at 40!
Good luck.......
Mark

"What a load of crap"!
Just stumbled across this and just had to reply!
I've been in the music, film and gaming industries for 25+ years. my company and many of the companies I deal with employ the right person for the right job regardless of age.
The main reason the record industry is in such a mess is because they are employing way too many people that are too young and way to inexperienced, that seem to take acts on because of the brief they recieve from upstairs, which consists of having the right haircut. lol! where as the film, gaming, radio and publishing based companies, they employ many different age groups.
Keep pushing and go for it, man. You'll be suprised!
Best of luck.

I totally disagree with the first reply, especially when it says anyone over 25 is too old for a creative post. Hundreds of famous examples in the industry prove the opposite.
I don't think you're too old at all. I'm 29 and have been doing an internship with a record label for 5 months now. Small paid jobs in the industry are starting to pop up every now and then, thanks to my internship experience, and things can only get better. If you have the time and another source of income to support you while you're working for free I'd say "go for it!!". I don't think there's an age limit as long as you're humble and smart, and I wish you the best of luck

I forgot to mention in my reply, that a prerequisite for working in the administrative side of music i.e. record / publishing / media companies etc. is that you have to be of the 'media' class, that is to say you must come from a wealthy / public school background, and preferably have been to one of the top five universities. This is because the music biz is not a meritocratic industry, and one is employed on the basis of one's connections rather than on ability.
Hope this helps, Ron.

A little note to maximex (Mark):
I'm genuinely very pleased to hear of your success, but in case you hadn't noticed, you are working in the engineering industry, not showbiz. Ron.

Age does count, but I know a lot of under 25 fresh of their degree who have no clue what to do when left alone to handle any situation.
My boyfriend started working as a video producer at age 46 (yes, not joking, and he is self-taught), and got several bookings for dance events since the first year he started. it's not big money, but it's definitely money.
so especially in the music industry age is less important than in other fields, provided you don't want to be the next Hannah Montana :-)
