I would love to get into music administration & am particularly interested in classical music. I have 10 years + experience of secretarial & administration work. I coordinate my church music group & have a church music certificate. I have grade 6 on piano & clarinet and have O level music & grade 5 theory. Most jobs I see I cannot apply for because I don't have A levels or a music degree although I know I am capable & have relevant experience to do the job. Do I have a chance of getting into this area or are there any courses I could do? Most courses I have seen are biased towards rock/jazz musicians rather than classical. My other problem is that I am 50, am I too old to get to start now? Please advise me.

Hi Liz,

You say you have 10 years experience in administration.

if you have that much experience in your field, that is as good as a degree. A degree is only any good if you do not hav the relevant experience for the job role, but it shows you have a willingness to learn and take information on board.

You ave proven your skills for 10 years and are still employed for what you are doing.

I would suggest visiting www.musicweek.com and sign up, maybe subscribe to the magazine, and also, order either the Music Week Directory, or the Unsigned Guide.

These 2 books are filled with contacts and information about companies, and are an invaluable asset to anyone who works in music.

As for your age... that is irrelevant! :)

All the best.

I am in a similar position, although i am half your age. I've been working as a secretary now for 6 years and have various music qualifications but no degree - although i have just started studying towards one.
I am also looking for a career in the music industry, at the moment with secretarial experience included although i will be hoping to change this if i can complete my degree - looking at being a teacher, music therapist or something else that is "hands on" with music
